Rod Ivers, KIØBW Silent Key
Rod was a long time ham in the Des Moines area before retirement. He and wife Loyce moved to Olathe Kansas after retirement but maintained close contact with many of his ham friends in Des Moines. His obituary follows below.
RODNEY L. IVERS
November 23, 1947- January 2, 2017
Rod Ivers passed away peacefully at his home in Overland Park, KS on Monday, January 2nd.
Rod was born in Des Moines on November 23rd, 1947 to Jim and Veda (Schlenker) Ivers. Rod spent his childhood in Des Moines graduating from Roosevelt High School. Rod met Loyce Bauman in Mason City, Iowa and they were united in marriage on September 1st, 1968.
Rod served his country during the Vietnam Conflict as a Navy Sea Bee. He was very proud of his military service and wore a Navy or Vietnam Veteran hat constantly in late years.
Rod was a graduate of University of Iowa and a proud Hawkeye, a love he & Loyce passed on to their two sons and five grandchildren. He studied accounting at Iowa and spent his adult life working as a Certified Public Accountant both in public accounting and private industry. He and Loyce called Urbandale their home for over 20 years until retirement. They retired in 2006 and relocated to Overland Park, Kansas to be closer to their boys and grandchildren.
Rod had many hobbies throughout the years including ham radio, working with his son’s Boy Scout troops, camping & boating with his family, working with stained glass, motorcycle riding, traveling and blogging. He was a member of the Des Moines Area Radio Amateur Association and Central Iowa Technical Society for many years. Rod was an active member of the Kansas City area Romeo Riders. He was also active with the Superstition Mountain Chapter of the Goldwing Riders Association. Through their retirement years, Rod & Loyce travelled together by RV. Rod began blogging through their trips and became known as “Retired Rod”. Rod was also a member of Colonial Presbyterian Church in Overland Park.
Rod was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years Loyce in 2013, his parents Jim & Veda, and his in laws, Leroy and Loy Bauman. Rod is survived by his sons & their families – Chris (Melissa), Claire & Abigail, Ben (Danielle), Caden, Emerson, & Delaney, all of Olathe, Kansas. He also leaves behind Loyce’s siblings and numerous nieces and nephews, countless friends he met throughout his life, and his precious dog, Biscuit.
Rod’s family invites you to join them to celebrate his life on Saturday, January 14th at Merle Hay Memorial Chapel. Visitation is set for 11 A.M. Funeral begins at 1 P.M with interment to follow.
